Straight Talk: Robert Moss, the founder of Playwrights Horizons in New York, was the first artistic director at the Hangar Theatre. Bob’s vision included supporting emerging directors and training young artists. The Lab Company was created as a place for young directors, actors, writers and designers to learn how from the experience of participating in a repertory company. This is very important. A “repertory training program” means that the focus is on how to form a company and create a season in repertory. It’s NOT a second company, or an apprentice company, whose main goal would be to act as support for the Mainstage. From its inception, the Lab Company was created on the belief that the future of the American theatre depends upon young artists learning to create new work together. Peter Flynn, the Hangar’s current Artistic Director, and Wendy Dann, Associate Artistic Director, maintain that vision today. And the Lab Company is where it happens. Every year the theatre receive hundreds of postcards, brochures, and emails from Lab alums who continue to create their own work rather than waiting around for the next audition. Be a part of the Lab. Back |
